Reviving Yengema: A Call for Action
Post-war Yengema continues to struggle with slow development…
But Touch of Grace is committed to accelerating progress.
Touch of Grace was founded with a vision to extend Christ’s healing ministry through medical missions, hospital development, and sustainable food cultivation for the communities we serve.
The organization is the brainchild of Alimatu Sangarie Sammarie, who established it on April 25, 2018. Her inspiration comes from Yengema, a township in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, a place she holds dear.
Yengema: A Once-Thriving Community
Before the civil war, Yengema was the economic powerhouse of Sierra Leone, renowned for its alluvial diamond mining. It was a melting pot of diverse cultures, where people from different backgrounds coexisted in harmony. The township was a land of opportunity—welcoming strangers and transforming lives. Many who came to Yengema found financial success, as it was a place where hard work was richly rewarded.
In its prime, Yengema stood above tribalism and regionalism, fostering a unique national identity rarely found in other parts of Sierra Leone. It was not just a place to live—it was a place to thrive.
The Impact of War & The Struggle for Recovery
However, the eleven-year civil war left Yengema in ruins. Once a beacon of prosperity, the township was devastated, reduced to nothing, and has yet to fully recover. Today, it remains a shadow of its former self.
Despite this, the spirit of Yengema lives on. Many of its sons and daughters have excelled globally—academically and financially. Yet, while thousands of successful Yengematonians live abroad in affluence, the community back home still struggles to rebuild.
Touch of Grace: A Call to Give Back
Touch of Grace is more than just an organization; it is a movement to uplift Yengema. We believe that those who once called this town home can make a difference. Through medical care, education, and economic empowerment, we aim to restore Yengema’s lost glory.
This is a call to all Yengematonians and well-wishers—let us extend a hand of grace and work together to make Yengema thrive once again.
Join us in making a difference. Together, we can rebuild Yengema.
